Support for the Hyde Amendment
As Catholics, we are gravely concerned about the prospect of any expansion of taxpayer funding of abortion. For 45 years, the Hyde Amendment and other life-saving appropriations riders have prevented taxpayers from being forced to pay for elective abortion. The Hyde Amendment has had longstanding bipartisan support every year since 1976, but is now at risk of being overturned. The USCCB has created materials to be shared within our parish communities, along with petitions and action steps. All of these resources can be found at www.notaxpayerabortion.com.
The USCCB and the Archdiocese of Washington will continue to oppose any bill that expands taxpayer funding of abortion, including any appropriations bill. Throughout the month of June, we are asking that parishes join us in support of the Hyde Amendment by sharing these resources in bulletins and on social media. Please also encourage your parishioners to sign the petition at www.notaxpayerabortion.com. In order to promote a coordinated action, we are asking that you encourage parishioners to contact their legislators during the month of June. However, this communication can also happen at any time!
Thank you in advance for your participation in this initiative. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Kathryn Windels in the Office of Life Issues at windelsk@adw.org.
