BREAKING: Commentary on new Pope bio by Elise Allen

Then-Cardinal Prevost celebrates holy Mass “ad orientem”.

“My two cents on the latest from Pope Leo XIV’s interview with Crux. There is broad continuity with the good aspects of the Pontificate of his predecessor, and interesting subtle criticisms of Francis and some of his policies:

“- Women deacons are dead. I’m mean they were never alive to begin with.

“- Church teaching on sexuality and gender will not change. A certain minority of people are obsessed with their sexuality, and see this as the defining part of them. The Pope almost implies that is this is unhealthy, which it is. However the issue is too polarising, and is not a priority at all.

“- Curia still needs Reform, implying the rushed reforms of Francis were not adequate. I mean Zanchetta got a bespoke job at the Vatican Bank. Leo wants the Curia to work more like the civil service of a well functioning government, rather than the dysfunctional court of an absolute Monarch. We will see what he intends to do, but it does seem he wants to take his time, which he has on his side, to get it right.

“- On China the status quo will remain for now because the Pope has no idea what is going on, and needs more time to study. In fairness to Francis, he probably didn’t know what was going on either. The question that I have is how much input did Prevost as Prefect for the Dicastery of Bishops have on selection of bishops in China. This interview implies none at all.

“- Traditionis custodes is not long for this world. The Pope will meet with Trads soon. The liturgy is another polarising issue, that the Pope most wants to deal with in the least polarising way possible, probably something like how Benedict did it.”
