N.B. The novus Ordo is a botched product. And a failed experiment. Sure, many people attend but there are always many people who just do what everyone else is doing for a variety of reasons. Some get paid to go, parish staffs and employees for example, some go because they are getting something like Catholic grade school or high school or sacraments like Confirmation. Some think that’s all there is. (Won’t they be surprised. And many constantly are when they finally discover what it replaced.)
And some actually like it. De gustibus non disputandum. People like Broadway musicals, too.
Lay people on average never were experts about matters liturgical and even more today know even less about it. Some don’t care what the priest is doing. They think of the Mass as a Communion service. They will go anyway for the right result.
People also like other forms of participatory entertainment where participation is measured solely by the criteria of loud noises and big gestures, but that’s a perversion of liturgy. Although that group is dying off. The younger crowd that likes it has a variety of issues such as rejection of modest dress and immature or feminist rebellion against being told what to do. Or the other families that attend offer some social networking that goes along with school experience.
Many give the win to TC because they like the TLM but will not drive farther than their geographical parish for it. These will “come out of the woodwork” in droves once their parish priest who offers the TLM on his every day off and at every other opportunity starts doing so again in the church on Sunday. These are the young families who generously have more than a minimum of children and home school.
The novus ordo has never been accepted by everyone in the church. Many priests paid daily to offer the new Mass would drop it like a lead weight tomorrow if they got “permission” (sic) to offer the Mass of the Ages under a new version of Summorum Pontificum. Many now offer that Mass privately and will continue to do so as long as they need to.
This is not our first rodeo. Our Lord started out in a barn. The Mass has been offered on rocks in the open, in hedgerows, in caves, in basements, in living rooms. Pilgrims visit Rome for the privilege of visiting the catacombs. And celebrating Mass in them. Nothing new there.
Viva Cristo Re!
