Francis’ extreme and conspicuous poverty price tag: 30 Million Euro

€30 Million: Pope Francis' Expensive Poverty

For twelve years, Pope Francis used the Santa Marta hotel as his centre of operations.

What began as an apparent gesture of ‘humility’ – "I prefer to live among the people" – ended up as a logistical endeavour that was neither ‘humble’ nor ‘poor’.

His original 50-square-metre apartment gradually expanded to occupy the entire second floor, complete with a professional kitchen, a private chapel, a reception room, and rooms for advisors.

According to Il Tempo, this cost 200,000 euros a month, including the cost of double security, hiring more gendarmes and increasing the number of Swiss guards.

Applied to the 145 months of Bergoglio's pontificate, the total cost is close to 30 million euros.

Pope Leo XIV has decided to make a clean break. From the night of his election, he did not sleep in Santa Marta. Instead, he stayed in his former cardinal's residence in the Palace of the Holy Office, and he plans to eventually move to the Apostolic Palace.
