What were these people thinking? Perhaps they weren’t.
Or perhaps they were zealous to demonstrate for the sake of the big donors they spent the money on something NEW.
Court jesters once wore such garb for the purpose of making people laugh, as a signal that what they say and do is a joke and not to be taken seriously. As in not “solemn”, which the holy Mass, for offering which vestments serve, indeed always and in every case is. Or should be. Not as dated pop art posters from the 70’s which this garb evokes.
Not to mention the new altar appointments and vessels which look to be designed like nonsense kitchen art by Alessi. A priest friend refers to the new altar as “that see saw thing.”
Proven once again: modern not better. No improving on tradition is possible. Stop trying. You succeed only in falling flat on your face and look silly in the process. Every time.
Nota bene: money is always well spent in restoring what is old. Just like Notre Dame itself.
