Islamists and the Tragedy of Holy Family Church

ANDREW DORAN

Three Christians were killed and ten others wounded last Thursday when an Israel Defense Forces (IDF) mortar round struck Holy Family Church—Gaza’s only Catholic parish—where civilians, Muslim and Christian, had been sheltering since the war began after October 7, 2023. As of today, the IDF confirmed that the church was hit by stray munitions (from a mortar, not a tank as previously alleged). While the tragic incident underscores the vulnerability of civilians in conflict zones, Western outrage—if lacking nuance—risks playing into Hamas’s narrative of indiscriminate Israeli aggression, ultimately serving its strategic aims.

Hamas’s strategic objective in the war has been to get its adversary, the IDF, to kill as many Palestinians as possible—a strategic end that may be without precedent—by using human shields. It embeds in schools, hospitals, apartment buildings, mosques, and churches, and then attacks the IDF in the hopes that it will return fire and kill civilians, condemning the IDF in the eyes of the world.

The IDF, in contrast, has sought to minimize civilian casualties in pursuit of Israel’s war aims: to rescue the hostages (fifty of whom are still being held) and destroy Hamas. Yet the moral scrutiny of much of the world has been on the IDF exclusively; it’s difficult to see how that exclusive attention on the IDF has disincentivized the use of human shields or lowered civilian casualties.

BREAKING: St John Henry Newman to be declared Doctor of the Church

St. John Henry Newman will soon be declared a Doctor of the Universal Church, the Vatican has announced.

In a statement, the Vatican said Pope Leo XIV, during an audience today with Cardinal Marcello Semeraro, prefect of the Dicastery for the Causes of Saints, "confirmed the positive opinion" of the dicastery's plenary session of cardinals, bishops, and members "regarding the title of Doctor of the Universal Church which will soon be conferred on St. John Henry Newman."

The news comes after the bishops’ conference of England and Wales had formally petitioned the Pope to name Cardinal Newman a Doctor of the Church. The initiative was strongly supported by other bishops’ conferences, including those of the United States, Ireland, and Scotland, as well as many academic institutions and religious communities worldwide.

Individuals in the Church may attempt to falsify Catholicism, but the Church can never be false

“Pope St. John Paul II declared that the Church has taught in an infallible and irrevocable manner that women cannot be priests. Thus, if the Church were to reverse this teaching, that would (obviously) falsify Catholicism, since she can hardly ever claim to teach infallibly and irrevocably if even purportedly infallible and irrevocable teaching can be reversed.

“Lewis’s conception of papal authority is not Catholic. In fact, he is committed to the voluntarist caricature of the papacy promoted by the Church’s enemies, according to which a pope can teach just any old thing he wants – even reversals of infallible traditional teaching – and the reversal will itself somehow magically become “traditional” or even “infallible.”

“This is worse than theological incompetence. It shows an incapacity for elementary logical reasoning. And it gives aid and comfort to critics of Catholicism insofar as it lends false credibility to the charge that Catholic claims to doctrinal continuity are spurious and that the Church’s defenders are intellectually dishonest.”

Netanyahu calls Pope after Gaza church strike as Vatican condemns “unsustainable” war

By Charles Collins

Pope Leo XIV spoke to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Friday evening, after a tank struck the only Catholic church in Gaza, killing three people. Several others were injured, including Father Gabriel Romanelli, the pastor of Holy Family Church.

Israel insists the strike on Holy Family was accidental. “Israel deeply regrets that a stray ammunition hit Gaza’s Holy Family Church,” Netanyahu’s office said in a statement. “Every innocent life lost is a tragedy,” the statement added, noting that the incident is under investigation.

“I find the Israeli Prime Minister’s willingness to speak directly with Pope Leo positive,” said Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican Secretary of State, in an interview with Italian news programme Tg2 Post.

Netanyahu made the call, during which Leo—according to a Vatican statement—again expressed his concern about the tragic humanitarian situation in Gaza, where children, the elderly, and the sick are paying an agonising price.

The Pope also reiterated the urgent need to protect places of worship and, especially, the faithful and all people in Palestine and Israel.

That it was the Israeli Prime Minister who placed the call is significant. Relations between the Jewish state and the Vatican have been strained since the Gaza war broke out following the 7 October 2023 surprise attack by Hamas militants, which left 1,200 Israelis dead and more than 250 taken hostage.

“Vatican’s Homosexual Network: Protected by the Secretariat of State”

“Twenty years of scandals, and the Vatican - to be more specific, the Vatican Secretariat of State - has learned nothing”, writes Phil Lawler on CatholicCulture.org (July 17).

He comments on the case of Rev Carlo Capella. The priest was imprisoned in Vatican City for possessing and distributing child pornography, yet he has returned to work in the Holy See’s diplomatic service — first without an official title, and now with a formal senior designation.

An official labelled the scandal as 'an act of mercy'.

Lawler asks: “Mercy? Not mercy toward the teenagers who were exploited by perverts to provide the images that were found in Rev Capella’s extensive collection. Not mercy toward the faithful Catholics who, doing their best to uphold the honor of the Church against increasingly caustic critics, have found themselves once again defending the indefensible.”

Lawler recalls that Rev Capella was not handed over to secular prosecutors and that “the Vatican” resisted an American bid for his extradition. Capella was allowed to flee back to Rome, where he evidently expected more sympathetic treatment.

In the canonical trial he was demoted from “Monsignor” to “Rev,” but remained an active priest.

Lawler explains why the treatment was lenient: “For the same reason that Marcial Maciel escaped scrutiny for years, the same reason that Cardinal Law was named archpriest of a Roman basilica, the same reason that Theodore McCarrick was sent abroad as a Vatican envoy, the same reason that Rev Capella is now back at work: Because the Secretariat of State takes care of its friends.”

He has another more sinister explanation: “Maybe so many Vatican officials have been morally compromised, over so many years, that no one is prepared to attack the problem; everyone feels vulnerable, and thus determined to keep the lid on. Maybe sexual misconduct is so widespread that—despite their public protestations—Vatican officials still take it lightly.“

It is abundantly clear to Lawler — and not just in cases of clerical abuse — that the Secretariat of State writes its own rules.

Scripture for today: “Be found faithful”

Let a man so account of us as of the ministers of Christ, and the dispensers of the mysteries of God.

2 Here now it is required among the dispensers, that a man be found faithful.
3 But to me it is a very small thing to be judged by you, or by man's day; but neither do I judge my own self.
4 For I am not conscious to myself of any thing, yet am I not hereby justified; but he that judgeth me, is the Lord.
5 Therefore judge not before the time; until the Lord come, who both will bring to light the hidden things of darkness, and will make manifest the counsels of the hearts; and then shall every man have praise from God.

Happy Birthday, Humanae Vitae

What if the Church had taught, and the World had listened, to the prophetic voice of Pope Paul VI?

Pope Paul VI signed Humanae vitae on July 25, 1968.
Pope Paul VI signed Humanae vitae on July 25, 1968.
Samantha Lejeune

Fifty-six years ago this week, Pope Paul VI released an encyclical that shocked the world. Not because it said something new, but because it not only refused to conform, but openly rejected the spirit of the age.

Change was sweeping across the world in the form of the sexual revolution, enabled by the birth control pill and accompanying loud demands to modernize everything, including the Church’s age-old teachings on sex and marriage. When the Pope released Humanae Vitae, many expected the new encyclical to go along with the times.

Instead, the Pope gave the world a challenge—but also a gift.

In Humanae Vitae—On Human Life—Pope Paul VI reaffirmed what the Church had always taught: that love, sex, and life are intrinsically connected, and that separating them would come with serious consequences. It wasn’t a finger-wagging lecture. It was rather a father’s tender but firm reminder that we are not the authors of life, but stewards of something sacred.

4 Years of Traditionis Custodes - 4 Years of Lies

An interview with Christian Marquant, of French association Paix Liturgique:

Paix Liturgique – Dear Christian, what do you mean by the title you chose for this interview?

Christian Marquant – That the motu proprio Traditionis Custodes, which was published exactly four years ago on July 16, 2021, was an extraordinary exercise of manipulation aimed at putting and end once and for all to the increasingly disturbing question of the renewal of those who are known as traditionalists, and whom I prefer to call faithful Catholics.

Paix Liturgique – But why do you call it manipulation?

Christian Marquant – Quite simply because this motu proprio was not a decision taken in light of reality but it was nothing else than a low blow based on a deliberate lie.

Paix Liturgique – What deliberate lie would that be?

Christian Marquant – One only has to read the text of the motu proprio to understand it… Indeed, it is presented as a response to the results of a survey conducted by the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith among the bishops of the Latin Church aimed at obtaining their opinions some ten years after the decision – and implementation – of the motu proprio Summorum Pontificum, issued by Pope Benedict XVI on July 7, 2007.

Paix Liturgique – But did this survey pose a problem?

Christian Marquant – Not at all! It was even requested by the motu proprio SP that it should take place after a certain time, a sort of assessment, or rather an analysis of the effects of this decision.

Paix Liturgique – But where is the problem then?

Christian Marquant – It is not in the fully legitimate survey which was conducted, but rather in the interpretation of the responses that ensued...

Paix Liturgique – And what was this interpretation?

Christian Marquant – That for the majority of the bishops who spoke out, the application of Summorum Pontificum posed a serious problem for the future of the Unity of the Church; which, of course, had the effect of suspending its application to protect this supposedly endangered unity.

Paix Liturgique – But then…

Christian Marquant – The real tragedy of this manipulation was that the "appreciation" of this investigation that was officially made in Rome did not correspond to the reality…

Paix Liturgique – How do you know that?

Christian Marquant – It turns out that there were a few leaks within Cardinal Ladaria's entourage that allowed me to gain access in 2020 to the true summary of the survey... which, far from suggesting that the application of Summorum Pontificum posed a risk to the unity of the Church, affirmed that the vast majority of bishops who responded (and there were a very large number who participated compared to other surveys of the same type conducted by the Holy See in recent years) had done so in a peaceful spirit and declared themselves largely in favour of the decision taken by Benedict XVI. Moreover, what I had read was confirmed by a subsequent article of Diane Montana, who must also have been aware of the summary, but especially by a forthcoming book written by Father Nicola Bux and Saverio Gaeta, of which I will speak afterwards.

Paix Liturgique – But then, who might have been responsible for this manipulation?

Christian Marquant – The enemies of peace! Because they understood that by using malice and, of course, dishonesty, they had a chance, and actually perhaps the very last chance to derail the work of reconciliation initiated by Benedict XVI in 2007.

Paix Liturgique – Is it possible?

Christian Marquant – There had already been a French precedent for this type of manipulation on the part of certain French bishops who, instead of allowing each pastor to answer according to his own conscience, had tried to propose to Rome a collective response that was, of course, very negative.

Paix Liturgique – How do you know?

Christian Marquant – If the enemies of peace do exist, there are also just and honest men at all levels of the Church who are scandalized by the deceitfulness of the wicked. Thus, we had the negative synthesis in our hands as quickly as those for whom it was written, and we published it (Link to Letter 761), demonstrating its deceptive nature.

Paix Liturgique – But could there also be people in Rome who were ready and willing to act dishonestly to harm the revival of the traditional movement?

Christian Marquant – But of course, also in Rome… where the enemies of peace discovered in 2018/2019 that the traditional revival was becoming a real problem for the future of their heretical projects.

Paix Liturgique – What revival would that be?

Christian Marquant – The one revealed by our multiple surveys, according to which, in every country in the world, at least a third of the practicing Catholics (or even non-practicing, for that matter) declared that if given the choice, they would prefer to live their Catholic faith to the rhythm of the traditional liturgy and catechism.

Paix Liturgique – But did this have any real consequences?

Christian Marquant – The enemies of peace were also aware of this reality and they had done everything they could to deny it with their incessant slogan, "They don't exist", , but unfortunately for them, that reality ended up being strikingly reaffirmed by the almost universal development of the traditional liturgy in the years 2020.

Paix Liturgique – A universal development?

Christian Marquant – Absolutely, because if for decades the enemies of peace liked to repeat that the traditional Mass only had defenders in France and then in the United States, they were then forced to note that in 2019 the traditional Mass was vigorously developing in more than 90 countries around the world.

Paix Liturgique – In more than 90 countries…

Christian Marquant – That was in 2019 because today, in 2025, despite Traditionis Custodes, the traditional liturgy is now celebrated in more than 100 countries. It is this "traditional" contagion that the enemies of peace feared.

Paix Liturgique – A Traditional Contagion?

Christian Marquant – Of course, because for a huge part of the faithful, the liturgical-catechetical broth offered to them by a lukewarm church seems tasteless, flavourless, and soulless. And by simple common sense, the holiness and catholicity of the traditional liturgy and its corollary, the traditional catechism, is bound to satisfy the curiosity and spiritual appetite of the faithful, but also of many priests, both diocesan and religious… especially in the internet age.

Paix Liturgique – How does the internet play a role in this matter?

Christian Marquant – It's very simple. With Internet, the publicity of facts, ideas, and information no longer has any limits, there are no barriers or boundaries any longer. If one is curious enough, it is now possible to discover the Catholic faith online from anywhere in the world... which wasn't true 50, 40, 30, or even 20 years ago, when this information was blocked by the enemies of Peace. From then on, a veritable trail of Catholic fire spreads to all the peoples of the planet, generating an unlimited development of the traditional liturgy, and this is undoubtedly what began to frighten the enemies of Peace...

Paix Liturgique – And that's why they decided to enact this odious manipulation?

Christian Marquant – Absolutely, because in my opinion, they sensed it was their last chance, i.e., they felt they had to take advantage of the pontificate of an aging Francis.

Paix Liturgique - But wasn’t it Pope Francis who signed these texts based on a false interpretation of the bishops' survey?

Christian Marquant – I don't think Pope Francis, who had often been ambiguous on this subject, was the source of this fraud; but let's say that he was actually duped by some of his entourage who led him to believe that the traditional world, which even if it didn't really exist, was beginning to become a danger to the Church and that a strong show of authority would make it disappear.

Paix Liturgique - Hardly believable! How could they have hoped it would work?

Christian Marquant – Remember Father Paul-Adrien's video: "Come on guys, stop playing around now, you have to obey and fall into line." It's probably in this sense that Francis, who probably wasn't the one behind this low blow, nevertheless let things happen.

Paix Liturgique – But there was more than that, since the Pope sided with the bad guys at least twice.

Christian Marquant – Indeed, and especially during his meeting with the Slovak Jesuits.

Paix Liturgique - But the most violent blows came from the strange Cardinal Roche...

Christian Marquant – Cardinal Roche undoubtedly tried to outwit the Pope, but it wasn't in Francis's character to accept being manipulated, and what happened next is quite revealing.

Paix Liturgique - What happened next?

Christian Marquant – That the Pope ended up receiving representatives of traditional religious communities and allowed them to pursue their charisms, which was in itself a huge snub to the enemies of Peace who had tried to manipulate him.
