The 34-foot-tall stainless steel Mary was officially dedicated on May 26, 2007. Her Immaculate Heart, surrounded by a crown of thorns, is hollow, and those who contribute $100 to her maintenance fund can have their names placed inside it through a hatch in the back.

Active duty military forbidden to participate in indoor worship

A southern Maryland Catholic pastor has reported that active duty military personnel have called him to inform him that he will not see them at Sunday Mass because they’ve been ordered to attend only outdoor services for the time being. They told the priest they will not see him again until the order changes.

Like a New Columbus the Church Must Replant The Faith

Our annual Corpus Christi procession has grown in size and grandeur in the ten years since I resurrected it. Now akin to a spiritual army in battle array, with banners flying, priest and faithful advance triumphant and victorious upon the field of engagement against an unbelieving world. This is a far cry from its dried and neglected roots after years of desuetude.

Processions, and anything beyond the mere Sunday obligation to attend Mass only, had been forgotten or relegated to the increasing number of “options” that seemed to promise a new and exhilarating freedom from obligations generally after the malaise that came with the advent of the “new and improved” Church of Vatican II.

The freedom of Christ had become confused with a supposed freedom “from” Christ. When the practice of the faith atrophies down to the mere obligatory the process is not a static one. That which does not grow withers and dies. Devotions, and even some sacraments such as Confession, began to fade into the background as vestigial memories.

A kind of spiritual materialism prevailed. The visible signs of bread in Communion and oil in Confirmation were thought to be something to “have.” This while the invisible aspect of forgiveness of sins through absolution was thought no longer necessary.

Saint Junipero Serra, pray for us!

Saint Junipero founded the Catholic missions in alta California, today the state of California, bringing salvation to the natives. He defended their human rights as they were under attack by colonial forces, and, though handicapped, walked and otherwise traveled by sea 2,400 miles to Mexico City to defend them by asking that a nefarious colonial military leader be removed.

It is estimated that Serra travelled more than 6,000 miles in the Alta California missions. He confirmed 5,309 persons during the 14 years from 1770 to his death at age 70 in 1784.

“At length, in the year 1765, the Supreme Pontiff Clement XIII approved the Mass and Office in honour of the most Sacred Heart of Jesus; and Pius IX extended the feast to the universal Church. From then on the worship of the most Sacred Heart, like an overflowing river, washing away all obstacles, hath poured itself forth over all the earth, and, at the dawn of the new century, Leo XIII, having proclaimed a jubilee, decided to dedicate the whole human race to the most Sacred Heart. This consecration was actually carried out with solemn rites in all the churches of the Catholic world, and brought about a great increase of this devotion, leading not only nations but even private families to it, who in countless numbers dedicated themselves to the Divine Heart, and submitted themselves to its royal sway. Lastly, the Sovereign Pontiff Pius XI, in order that, by its solemnity, the feast might answer more fully to the greatly widespread devotion of the Christian people, raised the feast of the most Sacred Heart of Jesus to the rite of a double of the first class, with an octave; and moreover, that the violated rights of Christ, the supreme King and most loving Lord, might be repaired, and that the sins of the nations might be bewailed, he ordered that annually, on that same feast-day, there should be recited an expiatory form of prayer in all the churches of the Christian world.“
