My latest column: “Why Change Is Francis’ Only Constant”

July 27, 2023

By FR. KEVIN M. CUSICK

Many pundits and Vaticanists are scratching their heads and wracking their brains in the attempt to make sense of Pope Francis’ cardinal picks, the appointment of Fernandez to the doctrinal dicastery, the high turnover rate of personal secretaries and other oddities of his pontificate. Of which there are many.

You cannot make sense of nonsense, however.

When the plan is apparently to undo all plans, turn the Church into an unorganized mess, overwhelm the Catholic system with non-Catholic and anti-Catholic distractions, substitutions and inversions, the use of reason is useless in making sense of it all.

Catholic writers who have confidently for years made a living explaining for the benefit of other Catholics the inside scoop on the Church are at loggerheads with Pope Francis.

The only word I have been able to come up with to explain the unexplainable is “overwhelm.” What do I mean?

Pope Francis, and those surrounding him who currently pose no threat to him and therefore are for the time being still useful for his purposes, is overwhelming the entire Catholic “system” to the breaking point. He has made it clear from the very beginning that his plan is to “change the Church so it cannot be changed back.”
We owe it to ourselves to accept that at face value. In particular because it explains well that the personnel, policies, traditions, customs, precedent, all of the revered Roman, Vatican, and ecclesial methods are overturned at whim in order to serve the goal of change for the sake of change.

But what is being changed? And why?

Pope Francis wears white as all Popes have since Pius V. The Curia still goes by the old titles of secretary of state, for example. Cardinals are still cardinals. The word “Catholic” is still used. Although for quite a long time already increasingly since Vatican II it may mean many different things depending upon who is speaking. Mass is still offered at the high altar in St. Peter’s, and sometimes by the Pope depending upon the latest vagaries of his declining health. Many of the old Catholic, Roman, and Vatican touchstones remain in place. Wednesday audiences, Sunday angelus. For many Catholics it seems, at a superficial level, that the old Church as always is still “there”

What is being changed? And why?

History repeats itself: “ ... the subtle enemy, seeking to slay souls rather than bodies, invented slower paths to death.”

How is this different from luring weak and tempted souls away from Christ to "the slower death" of the LGBTQ+ lie? The Synods will approve and the pope will promulgate. The agenda will be forced on the parishes and pastors will comply "or else". Fernandez has been placed at the DDF as trusted leader of the goon squad.

Banning the TLM was just the first step toward expelling the deposit of the ancient Faith entirely from the parish churches.

From the Roman Martyrology for today:

“ On the same day are commemorated many holy martyrs in the Thebaid, in Egypt, who suffered in the persecution under Decius and Valerian, when the Christians eagerly accepted death by the sword for Christ's name's sake, and the subtle enemy, seeking to slay souls rather than bodies, invented slower paths to death. One of them, after he had conquered the rack, and plates, and vessels of heated metal, had his hands tied behind his back and was smeared with honey, after which he was set in the burning sun, exposed to the stings of bees and flies. Another was tied down softly among flowers, and a shameless harlot was sent to excite him to lust, but he bit off the end of his tongue and spat it into her face as she was cajoling him.

“At Ancyra, in Galatia, the holy martyr Eustathius, who was put to the question with diverse kinds of torments, and cast into the river, whence he was delivered by an angel. But at length a dove came down to him from heaven, and called him away to his everlasting reward.”

Christopher Ferrara: "Francis Is an Open Enemy of Catholicism"

“Disaster" is the only word for Francis’ pontificate, Christopher Ferrara told Gloria.tv at the Roman Forum in Gardone, Italy (video below).

Ferrara is a famous New York lawyer who prevailed in court against Governor Cuomo's Covid closure of churches and synagogue (2020) and recently defended the pro-life hero, Father Fidelis.

In 2000 years of Church history, we have not seen anything like Francis, Ferrara observed, “It looks like the terminal stage of the post-conciliar crisis”.

He cannot imagine a Pope "more opposed to the fundamentals of our religion” than Francis, whom he calls "an open enemy of Catholicism” because, for example, he denies that the faith is a set of propositions to be believed because they are a prescription for human happiness in this world and the next.

Ferrara understands that Francis is trying to arrange affairs by appointing cardinals, “We're basically talking about ecclesiastical lunatics who will comprise the majority of the next conclave.”

Homosexualism is for Ferrara only Francis' opening wedge, as he has a wider agenda in mind, namely, the dissolution of the faith and of Catholicism as such, while "constantly belittling revealed truth.”
