I’ve seen and greeted Cardinal Burke in one of his walks through Rome. Gloria TV says this is him based on a Francis court journalist’s word. I, however, think it is a case of mistaken identity as the person in the video does not have the slower gait which I observed when I encountered the Cardinal. There are many clerics in Rome and many still wear Greca overcoat and black hat.
This guy walks too fast.
Unlikely it’s Cardinal Burke, although in contradiction to the report the cleric in question does appear to be wearing a face mask.

USCCB: No Cell Phones for Confession, no Delegation of Sacramental Anointing
Validly ordained priests remain the ordinary ministers of the sacraments, to include penance and anointing of the sick or last rights. These sacraments may not be simulated and must be administered in person, with priest and penitent or the sick or dying person physically present to each other.
This is based on the Incarnation, our Lord Himself the source of our sacraments, the truth that Jesus Christ is God made flesh, God made man, in the sacraments; our connection with his incarnational grace and salvation.
The bishops‘ conference reiterated this in a recent press release:
“WASHINGTON, D.C. — The chair of the U.S. bishops’ committee on liturgy wrote to U.S. bishops Friday, to clarify issues related to the sacraments of penance and anointing of the sick which have arisen during the Church’s response to the coronavirus pandemic.

“With regard to Penance, it is clear that the Sacrament is not to be celebrated via cell phone,” Archbishop Leonard Blair of Hartford wrote in a March 27 memo to U.S. bishops.
“In addition, in the present circumstances cell phones should not be used even for the amplification of voices between a confessor and penitent who are in visual range of each other. Current threats against the seal of confession also raise questions about information on cell phones,” Archbishop Blair added.
“With regard to the Anointing of the Sick, it is not possible for the anointing with oil to be delegated to someone else, such as a nurse or doctor.

Bishop Schneider: Priests don’t have to obey bishops, govt who suspend Mass over COVID-19
March 30, 2020 (LifeSiteNews) – Bishop Athanasius Schneider has stated that a priest, using discretion and following the necessary health precautions “has not to obey the directives of his bishop or the government to suspend Mass for the faithful.” He also described the COVID-19 pandemic as a chastisement and a purification.
Directives canceling all public Masses “are a pure human law; however, the supreme law in the Church is the salvation of souls,” said the auxiliary bishop of the archdiocese of Mary Most Holy in Astana, Kazakhstan, in an interview with traditional Catholic newspaper The Remnant.

The Scientist Whose Doomsday Pandemic Model Predicted Armageddon Just Walked Back The Apocalyptic Predictions
MARCH 26, 2020 By Madeline Osburn
British scientist Neil Ferguson ignited the world’s drastic response to the novel Wuhan coronavirus when he published the bombshell report predicting 2.2 million Americans and more than half a million Brits would be killed. After both the U.S. and U.K. governments effectively shut down their citizens and economies, Ferguson is walking back his doomsday scenarios.

Does God allow a global pandemic to cure mankind of the evils of a global ideology?
“On January 20, 2020, the Pope addressed a message to Klaus Schwab, Executive President of theWorld Economic Forum (WEF), of Davos, underlining the importance of an “integral ecology”, which takes into account “the complexity of the interconnection of our common home”. But by then a mysterious virus had already begun to inflict a deadly blow on “the global village”.
“A few months later, we find ourselves faced with an absolutely unprecedented situation. Greta is forgotten, the Amazon Synod a failure, the world’s political leaders reveal their incapacity in dealing with the emergency, the Global Compact is off and St. Peter’s Square, spiritual centre of the world, is empty. The ecclesiastical authorities conform to (sometimes anticipating) the restrictive decrees from the civil authorities who forbid Masses and religious ceremonies of any kind. The most symbolic and paradoxical event is perhaps the closing of the Sanctuary in Lourdes, par excellence place of physical and spiritual healing, that barred its doors, for fear that someone might get ill there, praying to God for his health. Is it all a maneuver? Do we find ourselves faced with a totalitarian power that is restricting the freedom of citizens and is persecuting Christians?”

Grace In The Time Of Coronavirus
By FR. KEVIN M. CUSICK
The coronavirus began late last year in China and has now reached our own shores. This after devastating Europe. In Italy now a number of priests and religious as well as hundreds of other elderly have succumbed.
All public Masses in many dioceses have been canceled in the wake of public advisories to avoid all unnecessary social contact, perhaps for at least another month. Rome has already announced that Holy Week and Easter services will be livestreamed and the public will not be admitted.
Increasing numbers of priests are now livestreaming their daily private Masses. My parish had not explored the possibility previously but we are now doing so, having found it is easy with the Facebook app, an iPhone, and a tripod.

If you haven’t been doing so, start praying the “Annunciation prayer”, the Angelus, today
The prayer called the “Angelus”, recited by the Church three times a day at 6 AM, 12 noon and 6 PM, brings to our minds and hearts the moment of the Incarnation of the Lord, and the beginning of our salvation, in the womb of the blessed Virgin Mary.
If you haven’t been praying this traditional prayer three times daily today is a good excuse to start doing so because today is the feast of the Annunciation and the Angelus is the “Annunciation prayer”.

Is this the Chastisement?
“Then He gave them into the hand of the nations, And those who hated them ruled over them. Their enemies also oppressed them, And they were subdued under their power. Many times He would deliver them; They, however, were rebellious in their counsel, And so sank down in their iniquity.”

Psalm 106:41-44
A woman wrote to me in grief because the adoration chapel at her parish has been closed even to small groups or individual worshippers. She is a mother of five and her husband an infectious disease physician on the front lines of this pandemic.
“Father,
Why??
Help me understand.”
I’m thinking the Lord has taken Himself away because of the so many scandals, the sinfulness and ingratitude of so many in the Church.
Here’s Cardinal Burke on the current state of the Church:
“We witness, too, even within the Church, a paganism which worships nature and the earth. There are those within the Church who refer to the earth as our mother, as if we came from the earth, and the earth is our salvation. But we come from the hand of God, Creator of Heaven and Earth. In God alone we find salvation. We pray in the divinely-inspired words of the Psalmist: “[God] alone is my rock and my salvation, my fortress; I shall not be shaken” (Ps 62 [61], 6). We see how the life of faith itself has become increasingly secularized and thus has compromised the Lordship of Christ, God the Son Incarnate, King of Heaven and Earth. We witness so many other evils which derive from idolatry, from the worship of ourselves and our world, instead of worshiping God, the source of all being. We sadly see in ourselves the truth of Saint Paul’s inspired words regarding the “ungodliness and wickedness of men who by their wickedness suppress the truth”: “they exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed for ever!” (Rom 1, 18. 25).”
We are doing what our enemies want: no access to Mass or the Holy Eucharist, and in some cases Confession as well. Worship is being treated as entertainment, canceled like the NCAA tournament, and less important than the natural food we obtain at the grocery stores, which remain open.
Again, Cardinal Burke:
“In our totally secularized culture, there is a tendency to view prayer, devotions and worship like any other activity, for example, going to the cinema or to a football game, which is not essential and therefore can be cancelled for the sake of taking every precaution to curb the spread of a deadly contagion. But prayer, devotions and worship, above all, Confession and the Holy Mass, are essential for us to remain healthy and strong spiritually, and for us to seek God’s help in a time of great danger for all. Therefore, we cannot simply accept the determinations of secular governments, which would treat the worship of God in the same manner as going to a restaurant or to an athletic contest. Otherwise, the people who already suffer so much from the results of the pestilence are deprived of those objective encounters with God Who is in our midst to restore health and peace.”

We are all sinners and no one is without some share of responsibility for this time of darkness and extreme spiritual privation.
We certainly can’t rule it out because it sure looks like a chastisement.
“Blessed is the man whom You chasten, O LORD, And whom You teach out of Your law...”
Psalm 94, 12

First heal the wounds of sin through forgiveness
For the Church salvation of souls comes first. Always. No matter a body’s condition always heal the wounds of sin while caring for the infirmities of the body.
There is nothing preventing us from doing both except for lack of faith.
Many unmask themselves as unbelievers in times of crisis such as this in which we find ourselves.

Fear Is The Most Deadly Disease
In these early days of spring, when so many promising portents of new life begin to make their beguiling appearance around us, many are, in an ironic tragedy, in danger of death or have died as a result of the Coronavirus contagion.
The return of new life in spring is for us a reminder of the eternal life bestowed by the Resurrection of the Lord, for which we prepare in these days of Lent by means of prayer and self-denial. We mourn and pray for the repose of their souls and the consolation of their families by means of the true faith.

Ite ad Ioseph
What and what manner of man the blessed Joseph was, we may gather from that title wherewith,
albeit only as a deputy, God deemed him fit to be honoured he was both called, and supposed to be the Father of God. We may gather it from his very name, which, being interpreted, signifieth Increase. Remember likewise that great Patriarch who was sold into Egypt, and know that the Husband of Mary not only received his name, but inherited his purity, and was likened to him in innocence and in grace.
If then, that Joseph that was sold by his brethren through envy, and was brought down to Egypt, was a type of Christ sold by a disciple, and handed over to the Gentiles, the other Joseph flying from the envy of Herod carried Christ into Egypt. That first Joseph kept loyal to his master, and would not carnally know his master's wife; that second Joseph knew that the Lady, the Mother of his Lord, was a virgin, and he himself remained faithfully virgin toward her. To that first Joseph it was given to know dark things in interpreting of dreams; to the second Joseph it was given in sleep to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven.
The first Joseph laid by bread, not for himself, but for all people; the second Joseph received into his keeping that Living Bread Which came down from heaven, not for him only, but for the whole world. We cannot doubt but that that Joseph was good and faithful to whom was espoused the Mother of the Saviour. Yea, I say, he was a faithful and wise servant, whom the Lord appointed to be the comfort of His own Mother, the keeper of His own Body, and the only and trusty helper in the Eternal Counsels.
From the Sermons of St. Bernard, Abbot of Clairvaux.

Basic Catholic tools for navigating this time of pandemic
Living our faith should mean we remain in a state of grace and also avoid pandemonium during the pandemic.
Serenity is necessary always but especially in uncharted waters.
Every Catholic needs a few basic tools in their faith toolbox in order to keep the Faith in these potentially troubling times.
I discuss a couple of these in my upcoming Wanderer column.

Oration, Feria II, Hebdomada III, Quadragesima
Prayer for Monday, Lent Week III
Let us pray.
O Lord, we beseech thee mercifully to shed abroad thy grace into our hearts, that we who are now denying carnal meats to our bodily cravings, may have power likewise to withhold from the same all yielding to the deathful lusts of sin.
Through Jesus Christ, thy Son our Lord, Who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, ever one God, world without end.
R. Amen.

This week: Private Masses for averting pestilence at our new side altar
Join me in spirit as I offer Masses for the intention of averting pestilence at one of our new side altars this coming week adorned with images of Ss Cosmas & Damian, physicians and martyrs.
Let us pray to the holy physicians of bodies and souls, Ss Cosmas and Damian, that we be delivered from threatening dangers, so that the Holy Roman Church may once more publicly celebrate the sacred mysteries in Her temples with all due solemnity and reverence.
Dominica III in Quadragesima: Sunday homily
From the Holy Gospel according to Luke
Luke 11:14-28
At that time, Jesus was casting out a devil, and the same was dumb: and when he had cast out the devil, the dumb spoke: and the multitudes were in admiration at it. And so on.
Homily by the Venerable Bede, Priest at Jarrow.
Bk. iv, 48 on Luke xi
We read in Matthew xii. 22 that the devil, by which this poor creature was possessed, was not only dumb, but also blind; and that, when he was healed by the Lord, he saw as well as spake. Three miracles, therefore, were performed on this one man; the blind saw, the dumb spake, and the possessed was delivered. This mighty work was then indeed wrought carnally, but it is still wrought spiritually in the conversion of believers, when the devil is cast out of them, so that their eyes see the light of faith, and the lips, that before were dumb, are opened that their mouth may show forth the praise of God. But some of them said: He casteth out devils through Beelzebub, the chief of the devils. These some were not of the multitude, but liars among the Pharisees and Scribes, as we are told by the other Evangelist.

Worship is essential but the Lord can work outside of it if we cooperate
We profess that God is omnipotent. Now We have an opportunity to act on that belief.
The Lord can work any miracle. He can sustain us in grace through the sacraments also at a distance. He is the same Lord who performed many miracles of nature visible to the eye. This was to confirm for our Faith that He is also capable of saving our souls.
His work of salvation continues and grows for us even when we must make a spiritual Communion out of the sincere desire to attend holy Mass on the Lord’s Day but are unable through no fault of our own.
“Now I know that the LORD saves His anointed; He will answer him from His holy heaven With the saving strength of His right hand.” Psalm 20, 6

For those unable to attend Holy Mass
AN ACT OF SPIRITUAL COMMUNION
My Jesus, I believe that Thou art truly present in the Most Blessed Sacrament. I love Thee above all things, and I desire to possess Thee within my soul. Since I am unable now to receive Thee sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace Thee as being already there, and unite myself wholly to Thee; never permit me to be separated from Thee.
A SHORTER ACT
I believe that Thou, O Jesus, art in the Most Holy Sacrament! I love Thee and desire Thee! Come into my heart. I embrace Thee; oh, never leave me!

Prodigal: A life deprived of grace, our divine inheritance in Christ
Thou seest how that the heavenly goods are given to such as seek them. Neither oughtest thou to think the father to blame, because he gave to his younger son. In the kingdom of God there is no age of weakness, neither doth faith wax infirm with years. He, surely, who asked, deemed himself of sufficient age. And would that he had not left his father! then had he been ignorant of the obstacle of his age! But after that he had left his father's house, and had gone into a far country, he began to be in want. Well is he said to have wasted his substance, who hath cut himself off from the Church!
He took his journey into a far country. No man can go farther than to abandon his own better self, to leave, not his country, but his morals, and, as it were, in an hideous fever of lust after the world, to divorce himself from the ties that bind him to holy things. Yea, he that turneth his back on Christ, banisheth himself from his Fatherland, and becometh a citizen of the world. But we are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellowcitizens with the saints, and of the household of God, since we who sometimes were afar off, are made nigh by the Blood of Christ. Eph. ii. 19, 13. Let us not envy the pleasures of them who remain in the far country. We too have once been there, but, as saith Isaiah, they that dwelt in the land of the shadow of death, upon them hath the light shined. ix. 2. And that far country is the land of the shadow of death.
But we to whom the Lord Christ is the breath of life, are alive under the shadow of Christ. And therefore it is that the Church saith I sat down under His shadow with great delight. Cant. ii. 3.The prodigal son by riotous living wasted all the gifts of nature. Take warning, O thou who art made in the image and likeness of God, lest thou waste the same by brutish wallowing. Thou art the work of God; say not to a stock: Thou art my father, Jer. ii. 27, lest thou grow into the likeness of a stock, as it is written: They that make them are like unto them.
Ps. cxiii. 16.
- Homily by St. Ambrose, Bishop of Milan.
Bk. vii Comment. on Luke xv

Priests should offer at least one private Mass daily
Canon law stipulates that priests “should” celebrate Mass daily. It is worded thus because it is foreseen that some events may impede a priest completely from doing so. Cessation of public Masses is not one of those things.
I’ve been made aware that some priests have said they’re not celebrating Mass at all, canceling all Masses when the Archbishop indicated there should be no “public” Masses.
There are two kinds of Masses: public and private. When the Archbishop discourages public Masses he is by no means banning private Masses, which should by all means continue.
Let us pray that common sense and grace may prevail.

What to do when you are unable to attend Holy Mass and receive Holy Communion
Make an act of contrition in anticipation of going to Confession at your next opportunity, in particular
if being conscious of having committed mortal sin since your last sacramental Confession.
Make a spiritual Communion, perhaps in conjunction with watching live-streamed holy Mass on Sunday.
Continue to persevere in acts of charity and in daily prayer in communion with the universal Church, to include the rosary.

- My Jesus, I believe that you are in the Blessed Sacrament. I love you above all things, and I long for you in my soul. Since I cannot now receive you sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. As though you have already come, I embrace you and unite myself entirely to you; never permit me to be separated from you. Amen.
