(LifeSiteNews) — Cardinal Kurt Koch has erroneously claimed that the doctrine “no salvation outside the Church” only applies to Catholics who already believe the Catholic Church “points the way” to salvation.
In an interview with Koch the day following the Society of St. Pius X (SSPX) episcopal consecrations, German theologian Jan-Heiner Tück asked the cardinal why extra ecclesiam nulla salus (“no salvation outside the Church”) has become “difficult” under modern conditions.
“I think it is difficult even under theological conditions, because this formula, extra ecclesiam nulla salus, naturally applies to Catholics who are convinced that the Catholic Church points the way to eternal salvation,” Koch replied.
“But we already have the fundamental conviction in Holy Scripture, and then also in Tradition, that God wills the salvation of all people [cf. 1 Tim 2:4] and that He then also finds other ways for people to attain salvation who have never come into alignment with the Gospel of Jesus Christ,” he added.
Koch’s assertion renders the dogma practically meaningless and contradicts the clear teaching of the Church, as articulated in the 1949 Holy Office letter Suprema Haec Sacra.

NAPLES, Italy (LifeSiteNews) — An immigrant man has been arrested after attempting to take the mitre displayed on the bust of St. Januarius inside the cathedral in Naples, Italy.
On July 8, a 43-year-old foreign national was arrested after attempting to steal the mitre displayed on the bust of St. Januarius inside Naples Cathedral. The relic was recovered within minutes through the coordinated response of the Italian Carabinieri and Army personnel serving under the “Strade Sicure” (“Safe Streets”) security operation. According to Italian authorities, the suspect will face a charge of attempted aggravated theft.
According to information released by the authorities, the man entered the cathedral alone and walked directly toward the altar where the bust of St. Januarius, the patron saint of Naples and the Campania region, is displayed. He removed the bishop’s mitre from the bust and quickly headed toward the exit before leaving the church.
The cathedral’s custodian immediately noticed what had happened and alerted Italy’s emergency services, triggering the police response.
The surveillance system installed outside the cathedral allowed operators at the Naples Provincial Carabinieri Command to identify the suspect as he moved away from the building. Army personnel stationed nearby as part of the “Strade Sicure” operation were informed of the suspect’s movements by radio and intercepted him a short distance from the cathedral.
Carabinieri officers from the Naples Radiomobile Unit arrived shortly afterward, placed the man under arrest, and recovered the mitre intact.

Later, while the Marines were out on patrol, Puller found that same chaplain at the battalion HQ. He told him,
“Your place was with the fighting men. You remember our little talk about Protestant boys joining the Catholics? They see those priests doing their duty and see you evading it. I can’t work up much sympathy for you.”
There were so many converts that mothers in the US wrote letters to the front, concerned that their sons would join the Catholic Church. Puller wrote back that if the Protestant chaplains had the guts to go where the Catholic chaplains did, where the bullets were flying, maybe their sons wouldn’t be converting.
Chesty Puller, a lifelong Episcopalian, had great respect for the Catholic chaplains of WW2 and even sent his own children to Catholic school after the war.

On July 14, 1570, Pope St. Pius V promulgated the bull Quo primum tempore, on the perpetual use of the Roman Apostolic Mass, stating:
“…so that the priests may know with certainty which prayers they must use, which are the rites and which the ceremonies that they must, under obligation, preserve henceforth in the celebration of the Masses; so that all everywhere may accept and observe what has been transmitted to them by the Roman Church, Mother and Teacher of all the other Churches, and so that, henceforth and for the time to come, perpetually, in all the patriarchal, cathedral, collegiate, and parish churches, etc…
We have decided and declare that the superiors, administrators, canons, chaplains, and other priests or religious of any order whatsoever cannot be obliged to celebrate the Mass in any other manner than as We have prescribed it, and that never shall anyone, whoever it may be, be able to contradict them or force them to change their Missal…”
The codification approved by St. Pius V through this bull could never be abrogated by anyone.

Regarding the DDF's explanatory note stating that confessions and marriages administered by SSPX priests are "invalid," Cardinal Gerhard Müller told me the following:

Cardinal Müller had stated earlier in an interview with K-TV that SSPX confessions are "valid but not allowed" after the excommunications following the July 1 episcopal consecrations without papal mandate. This has caused some confusion since Cardinal Victor Fernandez said in the DDF document that confessions and marriages would not only be "not allowed" (i.e., faculties revoked) but also "invalid."
