'This was not a Jubilee pilgrimage (where believers renew baptismal vows, repent sins, and commit to reform),' said the emeritus bishop of Hong Kong.
(LifeSiteNews) — Cardinal Joseph Zen has denounced the LGBT pilgrimage in the Vatican and joined the calls of other bishops to do reparation for the desecration of St. Peter’s Basilica.
In a Chinese-language statement published on Wednesday, Zen wrote: “Recently, news emerged that an LGBTQ+ organization arranged an event for the Holy Year, where participants entered St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome to pass through the Holy Door.”
“They brandished rainbow-colored props, wore clothing bearing slogans, and same-sex couples held hands passionately – it was entirely a protest action,” the emeritus bishop of Hong Kong noted.
“This was not a Jubilee pilgrimage (where believers renew baptismal vows, repent sins, and commit to reform). Such actions gravely insult the Catholic faith and the dignity of St. Peter’s Basilica – a serious offense against God!”
“The Vatican knew of this event beforehand yet issued no condemnation afterward. We find this truly incomprehensible!”
Zen stressed that “those with same-sex attractions” should be treated with charity; however, “we cannot tell them their lifestyle is acceptable.”
“We are not God,” he continued. “God calls us to pass on what Jesus taught us – that is true love for them. We must help them obtain grace through prayer and the sacraments to resist temptation, live virtuously, and walk the path to heaven.”
Zen referenced the call for acts of reparationmade by four bishops: Bishop Athanasius Schneider, auxiliary bishop of Astana, Kazakhstan; Bishop Joseph Strickland, bishop emeritus of Tyler, Texas; Bishop Marian Eleganti, emeritus auxiliary bishop of Chur, Switzerland; and Bishop Robert Mutsaerts, auxiliary of ‘s-Hertogenbosch, Netherlands.
