Fauci hearing should remind Catholics how US bishops betrayed them during COVID-19

 If Dr. Fauci committed crimes against humanity, then those clergy who collaborated with him are likewise guilty, especially of spiritual crimes against faithful Catholics.

The recent Senate hearing of Dr. Anthony Fauci turned into a farce when Republican Senator Rand Paul’s and others’ attempts to get answers on the government’s handling of COVID-19 were met with Fauci invoking his Fifth Amendment right more than 100 times.

Fauci, the former director of the U.S. National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), appeared before the U.S. Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee this week more than six years after the pandemic began.

Many Americans see Fauci as a villain and as the principal instigator and architect of tyrannical measures, dubious medical treatments, and draconian policies endorsed by the Trump administration. Some commentators have alleged that Fauci got filthy rich through a variety of immoral and unethical practices and engagements during this time.

Contempt of Congress

During the hearing, Fauci refused to answer questions about the origins of the coronavirus and other inquiries on pandemic restrictions, vaccine policies, and internal government communications.  

Senator Paul argued that repeatedly invoking the Fifth Amendment raised legitimate questions about accountability. Republicans on the committee have since voted to hold Fauci in contempt of Congress, which is a federal misdemeanor.

Paul also maintained that the American public deserves direct answers about decisions that affected millions of lives with business closures, education loss, mental health issues, the curtailing of civil liberties, and social upheaval.

US bishops were complicit

Equally important for faithful Catholics is that they cannot blame Fauci or the Trump administration alone. They mustn’t forget the despicable role the US Conference of Catholic Bishops played in the COVID-19 nightmare and how they forsook the spiritual well-being of the millions of souls supposedly under their care.  

Church leaders cooperated with public health authorities’ radical policies and even became cheerleaders for the jab, which Francis said was an “act of love” to receive. Prelates giddily put the sacraments on hold while liquor stores, casinos, and restaurants stayed open, leaving the faithful exposed to all sorts of wickedness and temptations.

One of the most shameful and scandalous directives in the history of the Church occurred when every diocese in the country suspended public Masses in March 2020.

22 Previously Unpublished Letters Add to Rupnik Abuse Case Allegations

Twenty-two previously undisclosed letters by members of the former Loyola Community in Slovenia have been included in the Vatican's ongoing canonical criminal trial, according to OSVNews.com (August 6).

The letters were written during Easter 2000 after the community's superior, Sister Ivanka Hosta, asked the 40 sisters to write directly to Rupnik about their relationship with him as part of the Jubilee Year.

The sisters were instructed to describe what had happened and to offer forgiveness in a process of reconciliation. Twenty-two of the letters describe psychological, spiritual or sexual abuse.

The letters are held in the archives of the Loyola Community, now in the custody of the Archdiocese of Ljubljana. Their full contents have not been made public.

According to OSVNews, the letters describe alleged manipulation, coercion, abuse of authority, and physical and sexual assaults. Several sisters said Fr Rupnik used spiritual direction and religious language to pressure them into acts presented as expressions of purity or God's will.

Some sisters said that Fr Rupnik exploited knowledge of their previous experiences of abuse to facilitate further abuse.

The accounts are broadly consistent with allegations against Rupnik previously made public by Gloria Branciani and other women.

(LifeSiteNews) — Bishop Athanasius Schneider warned in a sermon this weekend that “nothing is more dangerous for a religion” than “interference with the liturgy.”

The auxiliary bishop of Astana, Kazakhstan, defended the importance of upholding the Church’s sacred tradition, including its traditional liturgy, during a visit to the Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest in Limerick, Ireland.

He emphasized that it is a perpetual precept of the Catholic Church to remain faithful to its tradition, both “doctrinally and liturgically,” The Catholic Herald reported.

“True piety admits no other rule than that only those things which have been (faithfully) received from our fathers, those same are to be (faithfully) consigned to our children,” said Schneider.

“It is our duty not to lead religion wherever we would, but rather to follow religion where it leads, and that it is the path of Christian modesty not to hand down our own beliefs or observances,” he continued. We must “preserve and keep what we have received from those who went before us.”

Apparently commenting on the current “liturgy wars,” Schneider affirmed that “public worship is inherently traditional,” stressing that this involves praying the liturgy as it exists “according to the norms already established by divine authority and handed over by the ancestors.”

 VATICAN CITY (LifeSiteNews) — A lengthy document published by the International Theological Commission entitled “Caring for our Common Home – A Responsible and Fraternal Response to the Triune God” refers to the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass as an “ecological school.”

In the September 2 document focusing on the environment, “ecological conversion,” and so-called “climate change,” the Theological Commission devoted an entire paragraph (Chapter 2, section 108) to describing the Mass and the Holy Eucharist as an “ecological school.” While this paragraph acknowledges that the Mass is meant to offer glory to God, it appears to diminish the Mass and the Blessed Sacrament as a means of “caring for creation.”

“From the Eucharist flows a spirituality capable of supporting and encouraging the ecological conversion that we so urgently need to undertake as a human family,” the document said. “In it, we recognize God’s gifts in nature. Our intellect opens itself to the transparency of God in creation.”

While the faithful can offer prayers for the good of the environment, the purpose of the Mass is not for our “ecological conversion.”

On the contrary, the Catholic Church teachesthat the purpose of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass is to adore God, offer thanksgiving for the many graces we have received from Him, imploring His graces for ourselves and others, and to atone for the sins we have committed against Him.

“In the Eucharist, as a community of brothers and sisters, we recognize the purpose of creation and of history: to give glory to God through the offering—transfigured by his Spirit—of the gifts we have received from him, uniting ourselves to the self-giving life of the Lord Jesus,” the document continues.

Cardinal Robert Sarah has described divisions over the 

Traditional Latin Mass as “a true and proper sin” and warned that the Church in the West is living through “a time of great difficulty, even of confusion”. He also called for a return to Pope Benedict XVI’s approach, allowing the Traditional Latin Mass and the Novus Ordo to coexist

Cardinal Robert Sarah has warned that the Catholic Church in the West is passing through “a time of great difficulty, even of confusion” and called for the Traditional Latin Mass and the Novus Ordo to continue to exist side by side.

Inan interview with Il Foglio editor-in-chief Matteo Matzuzzi, the former Prefect of the Dicastery for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments reflected on the state of the Church, the transmission of the faith, liturgical disputes and the early months of Pope Leo XIV’s pontificate. He also insisted that the Church’s renewal depends not on adapting to contemporary culture but on prayer, reverent worship and formation.

On the state of the Church, Cardinal Sarah said the greatest challenges were found in the West, where confusion had spread across doctrine, morals and discipline. “Certainly the Church, at least in the West, is in a time of great difficulty, even of confusion, both at the doctrinal level and at the moral and disciplinary level,” Cardinal Sarah said. “The interweaving of culture and faith has never been irrelevant; on the contrary, it often conditions the transmission of the faith in a decisive way.”

The cardinal argued that the cultural assumptions which once sustained Christianity could no longer be relied upon to pass on the faith. His Eminence said: “I think it is beyond doubt that one can no longer entrust the transmission of the faith to culture; rather, it can be handed on to the new generations only through significant experiences and testimonies that place at the centre prayer, silence, the well-celebrated liturgy, a fundamental fidelity to the Gospel and therefore a renewed humanity, a more human way of living relationships.”

The Guinean cardinal linked that vision to Pope Benedict XVI, saying those communities founded on prayer and faithful worship were already beginning to emerge. “These are the communities to which Benedict XVI referred, and of which we are already seeing the dawn arise,” Cardinal Sarah stated.

Despite the difficulties facing the Church, Cardinal Sarah rejected any suggestion that its future was in doubt, telling Il Foglio that the Catholic Church, “over the centuries, has gone through many storms, but we must never forget that she is divine, and therefore will never fail. Yes, the Church will always be a beacon, because she is the Mystical Body of Christ, and Christ is the Light.”

The interview devoted considerable attention to the liturgy. In his comments, the Cardinal described continuing divisions over the Traditional Latin Mass and the Novus Ordo as damaging to the Church’s unity and argued that the liturgy must never become a battleground. “It is a drama, indeed a true and proper sin, that on an essential theme such as the liturgy there should be a kind of war,” His Eminence told Matteo Matzuzzi. “The liturgy is the source of the Church’s communion and it is unthinkable that on liturgical themes—indeed I would say ritual ones—there should be such opposition and such fierce confrontations.”
