Over 1.5 Million in Madrid: Pope urges pilgrims to spread the faith as youth festival ends; storm damage complicates Mass
By Associated Press,
MADRID — Pope Benedict XVI urged more than 1.5 million young people to become missionaries for the faith Sunday, giving them words of encouragement as he concluded a glitch-marred church youth festival and announced that the next edition will be in Rio de Janeiro in 2013.
Benedict told the pilgrims at a Madrid airfield hosting World Youth Day that they should not keep their faith private but participate fully in the life of their parishes and remain in communion with the church.
(Photo above right by Armando Franca / Associated Press: Pope Benedict XVI, center, celebrates mass at the Cuatro Vientos airbase outside Madrid, Sunday, Aug. 21, 2011. The Pope arrived in Madrid Thursday for a four-day visit to celebrate the church’s World Youth Day.)
“So do not keep Christ to yourselves! Share with others the joy of your faith,” he said.
Hours earlier, a fierce thunderstorm during a prayer vigil at the airfield had forced Benedict to cut short his remarks and slightly injured six people when a tent collapsed. Some makeshift chapels set up on the field’s perimeter were also damaged, forcing organizers to announce Sunday morning over loudspeakers that not everyone would be able to receive Communion during the Mass.
In fact, Yago de la Cierva, head of the World Youth Day organizing committee, said almost none of the young people received the Eucharist during the Sunday Mass, a serious letdown for such fervent Catholics to be denied the sacrament.
Despite the discomfort and disappointment, pilgrims who spent the night in sleeping bags, tents and under tarps seemed unfazed as they awoke to sunny skies Sunday. Organizers announced they were opening a new area at the base to accommodate late arrivals.
“The night was amazing, I didn’t sleep at all,” said Adrinna Wista, a 21-year-old Polish pilgrim. “We stayed the night chatting, meeting new people and praying with them. Amazing.”
Cristina Velasquez, a 29-year-old from Venezuela, said she spent the night with a group of Indian pilgrims after police, who had initially told her the airfield was full, let her in as the rain came down.
“Sleeping was difficult because the ground is quite stony. But waking up was indescribable, we are all so happy and united,” she said. “The pope’s words have made me proud to be making this sacrifice for his and Christ’s sake.”
Neither police nor the regional government have provided an official crowd count, but Vatican spokesman the Rev. Federico Lombardi said it was entirely “credible” that more than 1.5 million people took part.
Benedict arrived at the field Sunday morning and processed through the crowd in his white popemobile to the cheers and chants of the flag-waving pilgrims. Spain’s King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia were on hand.
In his initial remarks to the crowd, Benedict said he hoped the young people had managed to get some sleep despite the weather. On Saturday, 2,500 had been treated for mostly heat-related problems amid temperatures that soared to 40C (104F), organizers said.
The 84-year-old pontiff was kept comfortable during Sunday’s Mass by a cooling system erected on the altar; a steady mist blew down on him from a golden treelike structure shading the altar, which was set against a long undulating white backdrop.
This is Benedict’s third World Youth Day, the gathering of young Catholics from around the world once every three years that was launched a quarter-century ago by Pope John Paul II in a bid to reinvigorate and spread the faith among the young. It has the feel of a weeklong rock concert and camping trip, with bands of flag-toting pilgrims roaming through Madrid’s otherwise empty streets to take part in prayer and education sessions, Masses, cultural outings and papal events.

NYT: Nuns, a ‘Dying Breed,’ Fade From Leadership Roles at Catholic Hospitals
By KEVIN SACK
Published: August 20, 2011
ST. LOUIS — When Sister Mary Jean Ryan entered the convent as a young nurse in 1960, virtually every department of every Catholic hospital was run by a nun, from pediatrics to dietary to billing. After her retirement on July 31 as the chief executive of one of the country’s largest networks of Catholic hospitals, only 11 nuns remained among her company’s more than 22,000 employees, and none were administrators.

Sunday 21A: "whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven": God reacts to sinful acts by giving to Peter the keys of divine Mercy
For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.
The laws of physics are pretty predictable. The laws of human behavior, however, are not. Human reactions are sometimes entirely out of proportion to the event which provokes them. A reaction to a problem can present an entirely new problem in itself and sometimes may take the form of serious sin. Reaction to temptation which is consenting results in a cycle of frustration and unhappiness for the human person.

"Praying toward the east is a tradition that goes back to the beginning"
Modern man has little understanding of this "orientation". Judaism and Islam, now as in the past, take it for granted that we should pray toward the central place of revelation, to the God who has revealed himself to us, in the manner and in the place in which he revealed himself. By contrast, in the Western world, an abstract way of thinking, which in a certain way is the fruit of Christian influence, has become dominant. God is spiritual, and God is everywhere: Does that not mean that prayer is not tied to a particular place or direction? Now, we can indeed pray everywhere, and God is accessible to us everywhere...
But our knowledge of this universality is the fruit of revelation: God has shown himself to us. Only for this reason do we know him; only for this reason can we confidently pray to him everywhere. And precisely for this reason is it appropriate, now as in the past, that we should express in Christian prayer our turning to the God who has revealed himself to us...
The cosmic symbol of the rising sun expresses the universality of God above all particular places and yet maintains the concreteness of divine revelation.

"It is not right to take the food of children and feed it to the dogs"
This happens for everyone when they take the gifts of the Lord in the proper order: profession of faith and baptism for adults or religious education with Sunday worship following upon baptism for infants.
Incorporation into the Body of the Lord, the Church, through faith is necessary before one can feast as a child at the table with the family of the Lord.
“The unity of the Mystical Body: the Eucharist makes the Church. Those who receive the Eucharist are united more closely to Christ. Through it Christ unites them to all the faithful in one body - the Church. Communion renews, strengthens, and deepens this incorporation into the Church, already achieved by Baptism. In Baptism we have been called to form but one body. The Eucharist fulfills this call: ‘The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not a participation in the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not a participation in the body of Christ? Because there is one bread, we who are many are one body, for we all partake of the one bread:’ " (CCC 1396)

The Church is the "house of prayer for all peoples": not entitlement to miracle bailouts but the universal place of the ordinary miracle of Faith
Pundits and experts are saying that there is a parallel between the fall of Western economies and children's reading and learning scores. The sense of entitlement that has been bred over many years in these countries, they say, is reflected in the lack of a work ethic among the young now observable in poor educational results and the rampant violence in the streets of Britain and which now may be spreading to other places.
Having been given so much and worked for so little has aroused in some an addiction that must be fed through rioting and looting. In the burning and destruction of the property of others is a rejection of the society to which they once looked so expectantly to give them everything they lack little effort on their part. The false illusion of the "miracle" of free stuff leaves the human person weakened and vulnerable before the harsh reality that work and discipline is a fact of human existence, exempting no one from its laws of give and take.

Germantown MD: Hundreds Form 'Cross For Life' At Culmination of Summer of Mercy 2.0
August 8, 2011
Germantown, MD - Over 600 pro-life activists wearing red T-shirts converged on the corner of Wisteria and Executive Park Circle in Germantown Sunday to form a "Cross for Life" near LeRoy Carhart's late-term abortion clinic for the culminating event of the Summer of Mercy 2.0.
Addressing a "sea of red," David Bereit of 40 Days for Life encouraged the crowd, which then spread out down the streets of Germantown to hold vigil for the pre-born. In addition to wearing red, participants held red signs that read "Prayer for the Protection of Life."
"Folks from all walks of life and all ages turned out to pray for an end to abortion in Germantown and the nation, and to testify of the redemptive power of Christ," said Operation Rescue President Troy Newman, one of the event organizers. "It was an awesome witness to the community."
For the nine days of the Summer of Mercy event, no abortions were done at Germantown Reproductive Health Services, the late-term abortion clinic where Carhart works.
He is currently under investigation in Maryland for misrepresenting facts on his Maryland medical license application. He is also under criminal investigation in his home state of Nebraska, where former employees filed affidavits about illegal and unsafe practices they witnessed while in Carhart's employment.
Carhart slipped into town Sunday evening under the cover of darkness and quietly began abortions in the middle of the night and continued into Monday morning. Eleven abortions were known to be on his schedule as pro-life activists prayed and offered practical help to abortion-bound women.
"The people of Maryland are now activated and committed to this fight over the long haul," said Newman. "For nine days no babies died in Germantown because men and women of conscience rose up to stand publicly against the shedding of innocent blood. We have faith that the prayers for an end to abortion lifted during the Summer of Mercy 2.0 will soon be answered. While this event is now over, the efforts to halt Carhart's grisly late-term abortion business are just beginning."

Sunday 19A. "Earth, Wind or Fire?": God is not found in fear of what He has made but through Faith, a holy fear of the One who made everything
What do you fear? If you are like most people you probably have a very deep respect for the powers of nature, such as the earth, wind and fire. In the case of these fear can be a very good thing because it can save our lives. The powers of nature threaten us with death and perhaps we sometimes are fearful because we suspect we may not be ready to meet God and are afraid of punishment.
"The practice of the moral life animated by charity gives to the Christian the spiritual freedom of the children of God. He no longer stands before God as a slave, in servile fear, or as a mercenary looking for wages, but as a son responding to the love of him who 'first loved us':If we turn away from evil out of fear of punishment, we are in the position of slaves. If we pursue the enticement of wages, . . . we resemble mercenaries. Finally if we obey for the sake of the good itself and out of love for him who commands . . . we are in the position of children." (CCC 1828)

Vocation Thursdays: Tapping the Rock
I used to think God was pretty harsh on Moses. After he obeyed God and tapped the rock from which gushed forth a fountain of water to sustain the chosen people he was denied entry into the Promised Land. You see, he tapped the rock twice. Why did that get him on the wrong side of the Lord?
When God does something, even through a sinful and weak human instrument like Moses, God does that thing perfectly and therefore only need do it once. Moses was a superb "front office" manager as God called him to be for his time and place in salvation history but failed on that one occasion to represent corporate headquarters well even though the end result was the same as if he had struck the rock only once.
Jesus Christ offered Himself perfectly once and for all in the water and blood which gushed forth from His side on the Cross. But the work of providing His gift to every human person must continue until the end of the world. The ordained priest is a new type of Moses as "alter Christus" and taps the rock of the altar, symbol of Christ, every time he celebrates the holy Sacrifice of the Mass. This is one reason why the Church in her noble custom has always preferred a stone, or marble, altar to one made of less permanent material such as wood.
In the Blessed Sacrament, which the priest consecrates in each perfect self-offering of the Rock of our salvation, gushes forth once again His Flesh and Blood which provide the perfect food for His pilgrim people here and now.

Germantown MD: Numerous First-Time Pro-life Activists Help Keep MD Late-term Abortion Mill Closed
At mid-point of the Summer of Mercy 2.0, organizers are excited to see new faces joining the movement to stop abortion
Germantown, MD - Organizers for the Summer of Mercy are experiencing a phenomenon they did not expect. An estimated three-quarters of the participants of the Summer of Mercy 2.0 are residents of the Germantown area who have never participated in pro-life street activism prior to this week.
"We are really encouraged by the participation from the local Churches. Men and women who have never stood outside an abortion clinic before are bringing their families to the streets to stand for life," said Operation Rescue President Troy Newman. "It is great to see so many new people being brought into the movement and activated."
Summer of Mercy 2.0 participants gather outside LeRoy Carhart's late-term abortion clinic in Germantown, Maryland, three times a day at 8:00 AM, noon, and 7 PM for formal prayer and worship, and to hear from nationally known speakers. Smaller groups maintain vigil throughout the day.
So far, the event has closed down Carhart's abortion operation for the week. The leadership team made the decision yesterday to extend the event through Monday when late-term abortions are expected to resume.
"We know as long as Christians continue stand in public testimony, lives will be saved and eventually this clinic will eventually close for good," said Newman.
A petition to Maryland authorities is also being circulated asking them to investigate and close Carhart's late-term abortion business. So far in the event, 500 new signatures have been added with hundreds more expected by the end of the week.
"We are seeing a strong base of support being raised up to keep the pressure on here in Germantown long after the Summer of Mercy event formally ends," said Newman. "If Carhart and his cohorts think they can hide out for a week, then have business as usual come Monday morning, they underestimate the resolve of the good people of Maryland."
