The Banished Heart: Origins of Heteropraxis in the Catholic Church

The Banished Heart: Origins of Heteropraxis in the Catholic Church (T&T Clark Studies In Fundamental Liturgy)

Geoffrey Hull (Author)

This review is from:
Banished Heart: Origins of Heteropraxis in the Catholic Church (T&T Clark Studies In Fundamental Liturgy) (Paperback)
Geoffrey Hull's The Banished Heart first appeared in 1995. Since then it has gained a reputation among thinking Roman Catholic traditionalists as perhaps the most remarkable piece of scholarship to have emerged in response to what it describes as the Pauline liturgical revolution (that is, the Novus Ordo Missae promulgated by Pope Paul VI in 1969). The work is remarkable not only because of its erudition and scholarship, but even more so because of its utterly convincing and highly original thesis (one that goes far beyond - without disparaging - the typical traditionalist polemic). In essence, the thesis maintains that "present-day mainstream Catholicism grew directly from the official conservatism of the Church as it was before the Council", and that this conservatism was, on the eve of the Second Vatican Council, the apotheosis of a legacy of ultramontanism, rationalism and legalism that had been subtly but surely distorting the heart of Catholicism for centuries.

This central argument is developed by a detailed exploration of the effects of nominalism and rationalism on Western Christendom, before and after the Reformation; by a comparison of Western and Eastern (both Catholic and Orthodox) attitudes to the place of the liturgy in the life of the Church; by an examination of distortions in the understanding of the role of the papacy and of the charism of infallibility in relation to the liturgy - and, as part of all this, by a passionate defence of the nature and role of Tradition in the Catholic faith, including a fascinating analysis of the etymological significance of the word/concept that ranges over Hebrew, Latin, Greek, Welsh, Aramaic and German variants, among others. Along the way, The Banished Heart sheds light on some dark corners of recent Catholic history - liturgical and political - including the shocking treatment of Eastern Catholic Christians and Eastern Catholic culture by both conservative and liberal Roman Catholic clergy.

Although Professor Hull does not draw on the scholarship of `Radical Orthodoxy' (this new edition is part of a series edited by Laurence Paul Hemming who has himself contributed to debates about and among the `radically orthodox'), his work will resonate with all those who are convinced by that movement's critique of `secular reason' (or `rationalism'), standardization (a key feature of modernity) and the preoccupation with `text' above `context', a phenomenon more or less peculiar to Western Christianity, both Catholic and Protestant.

This second, revised and expanded edition, published by Continuum as part of the T & T Clark imprint, responds to recent developments in relation to the ancient Roman Rite, including Benedict XVI's Summorum Pontificum and the lifting of the excommunications of the four bishops of the Priestly Society of St. Pius X.

The work opens by quoting from Bl. Andrew Sheptyckyi, the great Eastern Catholic bishop - "The main goal of my life is the unity of the Churches, the unity of people, of God's children", and Professor Hull makes this goal his own. As he writes: "Hence, far from being a petty domestic dispute within the modern Western Church, present-day traditionalist dissidence reveals its providential role in the history of Catholicism, since it has brought into clearer relief the real cause of the centuries-old division between the Eastern Churches and Rome".

Benedict XVI to America: "Get active or lose your freedoms."

Pope Benedict Warns Americans: Get Active or Lose Your Freedoms

Dear Friend of Catholic Answers,

We are rapidly approaching a new election, and much hangs in the balance.
The Church is under assault in America, with the government intruding more and more, passing laws and policies that violate the Catholic faith and the basic principles of morality. Whether the issue is abortion, homosexual “marriage,” religious freedom, or a host of other issues, the forces that oppose the Church are on the attack.

Even Pope Benedict Is Alarmed
Word of how bad things are getting in America has even caused the pope himself to become gravely concerned. Recently, Pope Benedict told the U.S. bishops:
It is imperative that the entire Catholic community in the United States come to realize the grave threats to the Church’s public moral witness presented by a radical secularism which finds increasing expression in the political and cultural spheres. The seriousness of these threats needs to be clearly appreciated at every level of ecclesial life.

Pope Benedict noted that one right is being targeted in a new and frightening way:

Of particular concern are certain attempts being made to limit that most cherished of American freedoms; the freedom of religion. Many of you have pointed out that concerted efforts have been made to deny the right of conscientious objection, on the part of Catholic individuals and institutions, with regard to cooperation in intrinsically evil practices. Others have spoken to me of a worrying tendency to reduce religious freedom to mere freedom of worship without guarantees of respect for freedom of conscience.

The situation is alarming, but Pope Benedict pointed out the solution to the bishops.
Yet it isn’t something that the bishops can do by themselves. They can’t even do it with the help of their priests. The task is so great that it must involve Catholics at every level of the Church in America, including ordinary church-going men and women like you and me. Pope Benedict explained:

Here once more we see the need for an engaged, articulate, and well-formed Catholic laity . . . with the courage to counter a reductive secularism which would de-legitimize the Church’s participation in public debate about the issues which are determining the future of American society. The preparation of committed lay leaders and the presentation of a convincing articulation of the Christian vision of man and society remain a primary task of the Church in your country.

Pope Benedict has told us what we need to do, and it isn’t rocket science. We need to mobilize the lay Catholics of America to stand up and fight, to engage the democratic process and to use their voices and their votes in “determining the future of American society.”

But There’s A Big Problem
The problem, of course, is that we simply do not have the “engaged, articulate, and well-informed Catholic laity” that Pope Benedict knows we need. Also, far too few have the courage to counter the radical secularism that is trying to drive the Church out of the public arena.
Too often, all it takes to cow a Catholic into silence is to make the stock accusation, “You’re just trying to impose your religion on others.” Say that, and most Catholics have no idea what to reply.

But America’s future is worth fighting for—and it’s up to you and me to do it. We’ve got to get the laity mobilized. We’ve got to get them educated. We’ve got to help them find the words they need—to be articulate in defending the Church and the basic moral values that America needs so desperately.

That’s why Catholic Answers is rolling out three crucial resources this election year.
Let me tell you about them. . .

Reliable, Tried And Proven

One resource you already know about. It’s our famous Voter’s Guide for Serious Catholics. Since 2004, we have distributed this booklet each election year, and it has proved its effectiveness over and over.

The response to the Voter’s Guide has been so huge that we have distributed literally millions of copies.

This concise, powerful booklet is so successful that it is often imitated by other groups—and it is positively loathed by those who would water-down or even oppose the rock-solid moral principles that the Voter’s Guide contains.

The public’s memory is short, though, and people need to be continually reminded of the basic Catholic principles that must inform our voting—lest they fall victim to the distortions that politicians so shrewdly craft.

That’s why we’re rolling out the Voter’s Guide again this year, and we need your help to get it into the hands of as many people as possible.

But this year we’re also adding two new resources alongside the Voter’s Guide to provide even more focus on the most pressing moral issues in America today. . .

Archbishop Chaput: "may God grant us the passion to burn up every atom, every trace, every memory of ourselves in the fire of service to God's will"

"If Priests and Bishops Don't Change, Little in the Church Can Change"

"My dear brothers, God's Word never weakens. His promise never disappears. At ordination, God called each of us to a special relationship of friendship with himself and of service to his people. This is the real privilege of our priesthood. It's the only one we should seek; and the only one we need for a life of fruitfulness and joy."

FOR PRIVATE USE: Leo XIII's Prayer of Exorcism under the Patronage of Saint Michael

The following is the text (i.e., minus Psalm 67) of Leo XIII's prayer of exorcism under the patronage of St. Michael.

Any priest (or layman) can use it PRIVATELY, however the authorization of the Ordinary is needed for its public recitation. This from the translation of the Roman Ritual found on EWTN's website. This prayer is for general use--to combat
the power of the evil spirits over a community or locality.

[The following exorcism can be used by bishops, as well as by priests who have this authorization from their Ordinary.]

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy
Spirit. Amen.

[Prayer to St. Michael the Archangel]

St. Michael the Archangel, illustrious leader of the heavenly army, defend us in the battle against principalities and powers, against the rulers of the world of darkness and the spirit of wickedness in high places. Come to the rescue of mankind, whom
God has made in His own image and likeness, and purchased from Satan's tyranny at so great a price. Holy Church venerates you as her patron and guardian. The Lord has entrusted to you the task of leading the souls of the redeemed to heavenly blessedness.

Entreat the Lord of peace to cast Satan down under our feet, so as to keep him from further holding man captive and doing harm to the Church. Carry our prayers up to God's throne, that the mercy of the Lord may quickly come and lay hold of the beast, the serpent of old, Satan and his demons, casting him in chains into the abyss, so that he can no longer seduce the nations.

[Exorcism]

In the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and God, by the intercession of Mary, spotless Virgin and Mother of God, of St. Michael the Archangel, of the blessed apostles Peter and Paul, and of all the saints, and by the authority residing in our holy
ministry, we steadfastly proceed to combat the onslaught of the wily enemy.

[end--for the rest see www.ewtn.com/library/prayer/roman2.txt, about 2/3 down the page]

Thank you for visiting.
